How to clean your room with ADHD
"Clean my room" is a result with no edge. The bed, the desk, the floor, and the closet are different jobs. Starting all of them at once is why the door gets closed again.
One zone, two containers, five minutes
Stand in the doorway and pick the zone you see first: the bed, the desk, or the floor in front of the closet. Not the closet. Bring a trash bag and a laundry basket. Skip a full sorting system. A set of labeled bins is a new project.
Set five minutes. Trash goes in the bag. Dirty clothes go in the basket. Things that live in other rooms go in one pile by the door. You do not have to deliver that pile yet. When the timer ends, the zone is allowed to be half done. If the trash bag has anything in it, take it out of the room. That is the visible win.
Leave the next zone in writing
Write the next zone in one line before you leave: "desk, top only." The next start should not be a new decision from the doorway. Do not reorganize drawers or the closet in this session. That is a different task, and it will eat the start.
A room that has been bad for a month gets the same first step as a room that got messy today. The age of the mess is not the size of the start. Other chores in the house can use the same shape. See how to start chores.
If a list helps, make line one a surface
Type the messy sentence, then edit until the first step is a single surface. "Clear the desk" may still be too big. Slide it down to "throw out the trash on the desk" or "put the cups by the door." Then do that step and stop if you want.
The general method for any oversized job is on the breakdown page. The five-minute ceiling is the 5-minute rule.
Do it in this order
-
Pick one zone from the doorway
Bed, desk, or the floor you can see. Leave the closet for another day.
-
Bring a trash bag and a laundry basket
Two containers. Do not build a sorting system first.
-
Work that zone for five minutes
Trash in the bag, clothes in the basket, elsewhere-stuff in one pile by the door.
-
Take the trash out if the bag has anything
The zone may stay half done. The bag should not stay in the room.
-
Write the next zone in one line
Tomorrow starts at that line. Do not re-decide from scratch.
Where Inchly fits
Inchly does not know your room and it is not a cleaning service. You can type "clean the bedroom," edit the suggested steps until the first one is a single surface, and run five minutes on that step. The How small? slider is there when a step is still the whole room.
Questions
Should I empty the room and then put it back?
That works for some people and stalls others, because the room gets worse before it gets better and there is no stop point. Prefer one surface, trash, and laundry. A full reset can be its own task later.
What about stuff that belongs in other rooms?
Make one elsewhere pile. Delivering it is the next five-minute start, not a requirement for this one. If you leave to put a single mug away, you will find the kitchen.
How do I keep the room from reverting tonight?
Leave the next zone written down, and leave the laundry basket where you can see it. A perfect system is optional. A visible next step is not.
