How to start homework or studying with ADHD

Inchly is for adults 18 and older. This pattern is for college work, a night class, a certification, or reading you assigned yourself. It is a way to start. It is not tutoring, and it is not an assessment of how you learn.

Rename the subject into the next action

"Study chemistry" is a subject, not a start. The start is one page, one problem, or one paragraph. Put a single assignment where you can see it. Close the other tabs and put the other handouts out of reach for this block. They are not banned forever.

Rename the task: "open problem 4," "read the first section of chapter 6," or "type the heading and one messy paragraph." Set five minutes and touch the work. One short section, three words about what it said, or one practice question all count. Highlighting the whole chapter as preparation does not, if that is how you have avoided the questions before.

Leave a restart note

Before you stop, write the problem number, the page, or the sentence you will type next. The next session should not begin with a search. If you remember an email, a form, or something else you owe, write one line and stay on the assignment until the timer ends. That email can be its own five-minute task next: two sentences and a send.

If five minutes of reading leaves you blank, make the next start one practice question instead of another pass over the same page. A question gives the start an edge. Rereading often does not.

Late work uses the same first motion

Being late does not change the first action. Open the current assignment, not a speech about the last one. If you need to ask for an extension, that message is a separate five-minute task. Do not write the email and start the problem set in the same five minutes.

When an hour disappears without a felt sense of time, use a timer you can see. The time blindness page is about that cue. The general starting loop is how to start a task.

Do it in this order

  1. Put one assignment in front of you

Close the other tabs and move the other handouts out of reach for this block.

  2. Rename it to the next action

A problem number, a page, or one paragraph. Not the name of the course.

  3. Touch the work for five minutes

Read one short section, write three words, or do one practice question.

  4. Write the restart note before you stop

Page, problem number, or the next sentence. The following session starts there.

  5. Park anything that is not this assignment

One written line. The email or the form gets its own five minutes later.

Where Inchly fits

If you type a study, homework, or exam task, Inchly's on-device breakdown starts with opening the right page, reading one short section, writing three words, and doing one practice question. Delete any line that does not fit. You can also skip the plan and run Just 5 minutes with the assignment name as the title. The app is for adults 18 and older.

Questions

What if I sit down and immediately feel tired?

Open the page from the restart note and set the timer anyway if you can. Five minutes is not a promise to finish the set. If you are too unwell to study, stop. A starting method is not medical advice.

How long should a study session be?

Long enough to begin, then as long as you choose at the checkpoint. Five minutes is the entry. A second block can be another five or a longer one you set on purpose. Do not plan the whole evening before the page is open.

What about work that is already late?

Open the current assignment, or send the two-sentence extension request as its own start. Do not try to repair your feelings about the deadline and do the problems in the same five minutes.
